Late pregnancy or not having children can increase the risk of breast cancer.

Soy Foods and Cancer Prevention

Written By Unknown on Thursday, November 15, 2012 | 1:55 AM

The jury is still out on whether eating soy foods can prevent breast and prostate cancers, but the research is encouraging, particularly for women.

edamame, cancer, Food Cures Q: Can soy foods prevent breast or prostate cancer?
A: The jury is still out on that one, but the research is promising, particularly for women. Soy foods contain compounds called phytoestrogens, which are akin to very weak forms of estrogen. When eaten in foods (as opposed to supplements), the anti-cancer results are subtle, but still potentially significant. Phytoestrogens can bind to estrogen receptors in the breasts and other tissue and in some ways provide a kinder, gentler substitute for natural, ovary-produced estrogen. Since high lifetime exposure to estrogen is a risk factor for breast cancer, some scientists hypothesize that phytoestrogens protect against cancer growth by blocking natural estrogen and reducing total exposure to the hormone. In Asian women, who consume far more soy than American women do, a diet rich in soy foods has been linked to a lower risk of breast cancer and cancer recurrence. Current research indicates that soy may offer more cancer protection when it’s consumed earlier in life, during

2.            Invasive Types
Invasive Types : This type of  breast cancer has the ability to spread outside the breast, although this does’t mean it necessarily  spreads. Breast Cancer FAQs

  • Can physical activity reduce the risk of breast cancer?
  • Exercise boosts the immune system and helps you to keep your weight in check. With as little as three hours of exercise per week, or about 30 minutes a day, a woman can begin to lower her risk of breast cancer. This doesn’t require going to a gym either. Power walking is more than sufficient!
  • Can a healthy diet help to prevent breast cancer?
  • A nutritious, low-fat diet (30 grams or less) with plenty of fruits and green and orange vegetables can help reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. A high-fat diet increases the risk because fat triggers estrogen production that can fuel tumor growth.
  • Does smoking cause breast cancer?
  • Smoking is a confirmed risk factor for many types of cancer. Recent research in the last year (2012) has confirmed that smoking is a contributing risk factor for developing breast cancer. Additionally, second hand smoke is also a risk factor for cancer. So if you are a smoker, help yourself in a significant way and join a smoking cessation program to help you stop. The day you stop smoking the healing can begin and each week in which you are smoke-free, you give yourself increasing advantages for a healthier life. Smoking also directly contributes to heart and other lung diseases, too.

7 Tips to Prevent and Understand Cervical Cancer and HPV

1. HPV is a very common virus that causes cervical cancer.
HPV stands for human papillomavirus—-a sexually transmitted infection that almost every woman will get at some point in her life. Certain types of HPV can cause harmful cell changes in a woman’s cervix. If these cell changes are not treated, cervical cancer may develop.
2. If I have HPV, will I definitely get cervical cancer? No!
Although most women will get HPV at least once during their lives, few women will get cervical cancer. Most women’s bodies will fight off the virus before it causes any problems. You have a greater chance of developing cervical cancer if you have HPV for many years because your body has not fought off the virus.

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)

What is CIN?

CIN is caused by the persistent infection of high-risk HPV subtypes. It is not a cancer but a 'preinvasive' disease, in which a group of malignant cells (called a lesion) has formed but has not yet invaded surrounding tissues and other parts of the body. In the name 'Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia', 'neoplasia' indicates an abnormal growth, and 'intraepithelial' indicates the position of the growth in between layers of cell tissue.
CIN is usually categorized into grades which signify the proportion of abnormal to normal cells and correlates to the risk of progression to invasive cancer. Grade 1 signifies a low risk of cancer: most low grade CINs resolve themselves within a relatively short space of time. However, grades 2 and 3 imply a greater proportion of abnormal cells and a higher probability of eventual cancer.

Cervical cancer o

Cervical cancer typically develops slowly over time with abnormal cells beginning to grow in the cervix first. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus where the uterus connects to the vagina. These are the cells that are most often found during screening tests. If abnormal cells are not found and treated, cancer cells may grow and spread further into the cervix and to other organs in the area.
Abnormal cervical cells grow most often in women 20-30 years old. Because cervical cancer is a slow-growing cancer, the chance of death is highest for white women between 45-70 years old and for black women age 70 and up. Death from cervical cancer is seen most often in black women than white women.

Mesothelioma Cancer

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 | 3:38 PM

Malignant mesothelioma is the most serious of all asbestos-related diseases. Although uncommon, mesothelioma cancer is no longer considered rare. The primary cause and risk factor for mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos.
Making a correct mesothelioma diagnosis is particularly difficult for doctors because the disease often presents with symptoms that mimic other common ailments. There is no known cure for mesothelioma, but treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy have helped to improve the typical mesothelioma prognosis.
Pleural mesothelioma (affecting the lung’s protective lining in the chest cavity) represents about three quarters of all mesothelioma incidence. Peritoneal mesothelioma which affects the abdominal cavity and pericardial mesothelioma, which affects the cardiac cavity, comprise the remainder. Testicular mesothelioma is extremely rare and is typically presents with metastases of the peritoneal variety. There are three recognized mesothelioma cell-types. Between 50 and 70% of all mesotheliomas are of the epithelial variety. While prognosis is generally poor, it is considered less aggressive than sarcomatoid mesothelioma and biphasic mesothelioma, which comprise the remainder of cell type diagnoses.

What is Cancer? What Causes Cancer?

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by out-of-control cell growth. There are over 100 different types of cancer, and each is classified by the type of cell that is initially affected.
Cancer harms the body when damaged cells divide uncontrollably to form lumps or masses of tissue called tumors (except in the case of leukemia where cancer prohibits normal blood function by abnormal cell division in the blood stream). Tumors can grow and interfere with the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems, and they can release hormones that alter body function. Tumors that stay in one spot and demonstrate limited growth are generally considered to be benign.
