The brain is powered by electrical impulses from neurons or nerve cells. These impulses release hundreds of chemicals into the gaps between the cells. These chemicals called neurotransmitters convey the impulses to adjoining cells.
 No one knows for sure what causes depression but it may be that an imbalance of the neurotransmitters affects how we think and feel. Two of the neurotransmitters, serotonin and norepinephrine are thought to have a particular connection with the emotions. Antidepressant medications may help to restore the brains normal balance of such chemicals.
 Antidepressants often enable people with short term depression to quickly return to thinking and feeling much the way they did before illness took hold. People who have been depressed longer – sometimes most of their lives- may at long last, with the help of these medications experience a substantial degree of relief. These days antidepressants are also prescribed for a host of other ailments: premenstrual syndrome, anxiety disorders ( excessive worry and fear ) obsessive – compulsive disorder ( uncontrollable repetitive behavior) and panic syndrome ( extreme feelings of dread heart palpitations and shortness of breath.
